There is, of course, no such thing as a typical user – everyone is different. However, one does have an idea of a central user, for instance a nineteen-year-old student for a University virtual learning system. Furthermore, when doing any form of statistics based on a user study the user you are trying to understand is not so much the specific people taking part in your study, or even the collection of all current users, but some kind of idealised conception of a potential user.
